If One More Person Asks...

If I go on one more interview where they ask me if I have kids and what do I do for child care I am seriously going to lose it! What the hell?? If I were a man would they ask that question? Seriously, do any of you think a man would be asked that question? Why the hell do they think it is ok to ask me that question? Don't ask about my computer or accounting experience, just what do you do for child care and is it ever an issue? Of course it's an issue BUT it is MY issue, not yours. Frankly, it's none of your damn business!

Thanks, I feel a little better now.

I don't think that they can legally ask you that...and you don't have to answer that.

Good Luck!!

WTF? I don't think that's legal!

They aren't allowed to ask you that question.

They aren't allowed to ask that question but when they have 100+ resumes, the economy sucks and I need a job- what can I do but answer?

They can't legally ask...I wonder why they think they can? doesn't seem right.

I wonder if you can answer really ambiguously - "Why yes, my children are great and my childcare is very adaptive to my needs." something along those lines....

Or just smile and say, "Why? Do you plan on having a daycare on sight?"

Oh crap, what an awful situation.

dulurking to say, first that is illegal and second maybe you should just lie :) People are so rude....
I guess lying isn't a good idea, but maybe you could just gloss over your answer.

TOTALLY not legal. They could get into BIG trouble for asking that question.

As the interviewEE, you can offer info about your kids, lifestyle, marriage/divorce, etc. They are NOT allowed to ask and have violated state and federal law by doing so.

Whenever I interview, the entire panel reviews this fact so that no one makes the mistake of asking such crap.

Your last line? Too right. NONE of their DAMN business.

I would report every single one of those compnaies to the labour board or whomever it is that takes those complaints. Oh, and I would ask right out if they ask male applicants that question. Shame em and name em.

I was thinking along the same lines as Emma: Look them dead in the eye and say, "I'm quite sure you're not allowed to ask that question. Are you asking your male applicants?"

Of course, it would almost certainly mean you didn't get the job, too... Hm. So now you're down to fudging the facts a bit in the interview (maybe your husband could be a SAHD??) -- and reporting them after!
